To a gamer, the difference between that final game winning kill and the sting of defeat could be the very equipment that he or she chooses to use. Specifically, a bad mouse can lead to poor performance as well as many headaches. While there are many mouses to choose from, I chose to review the Logitech G500 programmable gaming mouse.

Initial Feeling
When you first look at the G500, the first word that comes to mind is “simple.” There is simply nothing flashy about this mouse and that is not necessarily a bad thing. It has a classic feel in the palm, with a slight lip next to the left click to rest your thumb for quick, easy access to the three side buttons. The grips on the sides of the mouse have a slight texture but it is smooth on the top. It is a mouse that can work for the gamer who also uses a computer to program or study. A very clean design indeed.
Performance
In terms of outright performance, the G500 is solid. The mouse was quick to respond with the generic dpi settings but with some tweaking, I am able to customize the settings through the Logitech gaming software to my own play style. The handy lights on the mouse make it easy to see which of the 5 dpi settings the mouse is currently on. I initially had a problem with the placement of the dpi plus and minus buttons as they are very close to the left mouse click. I would sometimes accidentally hit these dpi buttons and my reticule for Battlefield 4 would all of a suddenly act differently. But with time, I was able to avoid this problem. I do wish the weight cartridge was a bit more “spread out” if you will. The cartridge itself can have up to 27 g of weights or the cartridge can be completely removed. The problem for me is that the placement of the cartridge within the mouse made it feel very “back heavy.” A more evenly spread out weight system would make this mouse more customizable to the users feel. The middle mouse wheel is incredibly responsive whether it is in “notch” or “free wheel” mode. The three buttons on the side of the G500 made for a very pleasant gaming experience as they are placed just about the thumb lip. I use them as push to talk buttons and macros for when I game and volume buttons when I am browsing the Internet. Switching between the two modes is easy thanks to the software.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the Logitech G500 gaming mouse is a good mouse for the casual to serious gamer who wants equipment to be functional in gaming and in general. I am going to give the mouse a TechPirate grade of A- due to weight distribution problems and its price. A hundred dollars for a gaming mouse is a bit excessive considering the next gen Logitech G502 is only $80.

Very good post, however, having had that exact mouse for 4 years I find that the accessories are very easily lost. That said it is an excellent mouse, I very much enjoyed the visual indicator too which DPI setting you are on. The current mouse I have is more comfortable but lacks the weight and visual indicator that the G500 has.
The issues I am seeing in the industry are in regards to training and education. The next generation is learning the skills but will they have the ability to be placed in the workforce??
