The End of Windows Mobile

Lumia 640 and 640 XL users should mark their calendars, the end date has been set for June 11th, 2019. That is when Microsoft will officially end support for Windows Mobile version 1703 and represents the end of the Microsoft’s foray into the mobile market. This means that there will be no more free security or technical updates. The proverbial final nail comes from Microsoft’s website itself in that it recommends that any current users of Windows Mobile migrate to one of their competitors (Android or IOS) sooner rather than later.

We here at TheTechPirate are not exactly surprised since the platform never owned more than 3.6% of the smartphone market at any given time since even the days of Windows Phone 8, which launched in all the way back in 2012. For reference, Android owns about 88% of the market and IOS owns about 11.9% as of Q2 2018 according to statista.com.
